In the late summer of 2004, in a restaurant kitchen in Boulder, Colorado, Dave Cuomo snapped and decided it was time to put an end to the years he'd spent on a grueling culinary career. Carlos and the other cooks wished him luck as he set out for New York to try his luck as a folk singer. He had exhausted the small struggling Boulder folk scene, where he had spent years busking the streets for extra cash, while playing every open mic and show he could find, even opening for presidential candidate Howard Dean as his rally made its way through town. Arriving in NYC Dave went straight to work, carving out a living playing the subways, while linking up with his brother Jes to form Cuomo! With Jes’s years of classical and jazz study, having attended college on a piano scholarship, and Dave's background in poetry, including a BA in creative writing, Cuomo! is intent on pushing the artistic boundaries of folk songwriting. Much like the group’s own struggles to form and break ground in New York’s extremely competitive music scene, Cuomo!’s songs reflect the search for hopeful possibilities in bleak surroundings. Their sound, as a reflection of their own early involvement in and love for the DIY punk scene, takes the ethics of simple song structure and stripped down energy of The Ramones or The Clash, then applies the lyrical sensibilities and songwriting sophistication of Bob Dylan or Simon & Garfunkel. These elements combined have created a stripped down and earthy folk aesthetic steeped with a lyrical quality of honest cynicism and lonely optimism that attempts to bring a refreshingly humble approach to socially conscious and political songwriting...

Following their first 6 months as successful full-time subway musicians, Cuomo! quickly evolved into playing venues across New York City such as The Knitting Factory, CB’s Gallery, Bowery Poetry Club, Stain, Postcrypt Coffeehouse, and anti-folk flagship, The Sidewalk Cafe. Cuomo!’s music has simultaneously crossed over into the anti-folk and folk-punk scenes, while taking an active role in the recent wide spread rise of acoustic and roots music. After working as a columnist, reviewer, and interviewer for indy rock fanzine, The New Scheme, for several years he founded Urban Folk, a community magazine for acoustic songwriters in New York. Having served as editor for a year he quit to focus on traveling and music and now publishes stories about his experiences as a personal zine. The first issue is Subway Stories and Other Folk Tales available wherever you find him playing.
